Ash loves working with Abhishek
(NSI News Source Info) Mumbai - October 31, 2008: Aishwarya Rai is excited about teaming up with hubby Abhishek Bachchan for Mani Ratnam's next film but reluctant to reveal much about the movie."It's a really exciting thought for me and Abhishek to be coming together again with Mani Ratnam. All I can say about the film is that it goes into a completely different theme from Guru," said Aishwarya, who turns 35 on Saturday."You can't expect Mani sir to go into the same space twice. Working with him is an exciting thought for any actor. The way he connects to his actors is very clear in the films that he makes. He creates magic on screen," she added.
Aishwarya says Guru, in which she paired with Abhishek, was a very precious experience. "It has been a very precious experience on every level, and not just on a personal level. I'd say it was professionally very fulfilling."The last couple of months have been very hectic for the actress. "I had joined Abhishek in Jaipur where he was shooting for Dilli 6. Then I was with him in Miami for . I also packed in Cannes and Paris. Life is beautiful. It really is. You know, life is as special as you make it for yourself. Of course, you can't live your life in a bubble. There're people who want to rain on your parade. It's up to you how you protect your space," said Aishwarya who just finished the first lap of the world tour Unforgettable'.She is also doing Shankar's Robot and has teamed up with Tamil superstar Rajnikant in the movie. It got delayed because the film's writer passed away in February this year, thereby pushing the project back by some months."After Sujatha sir's sad demise, the project got delayed slightly. People chose this tragedy as an occasion to spread all kinds of rumours when the fact is death slowed down 'Robot'. But we're back on track, though now we need to work on a tighter schedule."Explaining why the film needs extra planning, she said: "Robot has loads of special effects. And the film will be using a lot of crew from overseas. All this needed re-scheduling."Robot wouldn't be the first FX driven film in Aishwarya's career."There was Dhoom 2. And right at the start of my career I did Jeans. And that too had very complicated special effects. And I had to do it in Tamil. So I learned a lot during Jeans, as I hope to do during Robot."Clearing another misconception about Robot, she said: "People seem to think it's in Tamil and Hindi. But it's only in Tamil."Tell her she's now equipped to direct a film, and Aishwarya laughs. "Everyone says that. I don't know, maybe one day."
Golmaal Returns, Fashion end dry spell
(NSI News Source Info) Mumbai - October 31, 2008: The Diwali week has ended the dry spell, at least going by the Wednesday numbers. Golmaal Returns opened to an excellent response all over, at every station of the country. The terrific start is being attributed to various factors, mainly the festive period. People are in a mood to celebrate and Golmaal Returns, on face value, seemed the perfect film for an outing. The extra-ordinary promotion by Shree Ashtavinayak was another factor that attracted attention. Also, Golmaal is still fresh and its sequel was expected to open well. However, the reports are mixed.Talking purely from the business point of view, the film has cost Indian Films/Studio 18 approx Rs 45 crores and the film's performance in India and also Overseas in the coming days will be the deciding factor. On the other hand, Fashion embarked on a slow start at places, but picked up dramatically as the day progressed. The film was best at multiplexes of big centres, but even at as the day progressed. However, the exhibitors are unanimous that the running time of almost 2.45 hours is proving a deterrent and going by the initial reports, the moviegoers are getting restless towards the second half, thanks to the excessive length. Besides, the 'A' certificate seems to have kept the families away.
Fashion - a truly outstanding film
(NSI News Source Info) Mumbai - October 31, 2008: Somewhere in the second-half of the heartrending evocation of the tragedy that underscores the glamour of the fashion world, all dialogues cease, as Madhur Bhandarkar, in his inimitable style, records Priyanka Chopra's character's descent into hell. It's as though the music and the zing have suddenly decided to go out of her life. This is where we realise the truth about all works of art. The sum-total of Bhandarkar's vision is far greater than the captivating components that characterise his protagonist's journey to painful self-realisation.If we look at the issue of morality in Bhandarkar's cinema, then all his protagonists reach a stage in their life when they cannot look themselves in the eye. That moment of reckoning in Fashion reflects itself effortlessly in Priyanka's face. It's her character Meghna's journey from the innocent aridity of Chandigarh to the corruption of Mumbai's modeling world. This remarkably resonant film is arguably Bhandarkar's most accomplished work to date, though Page 3 comes close in terms of etching out even the smallest of characters.Mahesh Limaye's cinematography is a little predictable in its bustle-and-bristle images. Fortunately the storytelling is anything but predictable.Screenwriting has always been the greatest strength of Bhandarkar's cinema. The screenplay conveys a lived-in 'overheard-at-a-party' kind of conversational tone.Rhetorics and high-drama are exchanged for fearless transparency in the characterisations and conversations. What we eventually look at is not a tantalizing dekko at the beau monde but a breathtaking map of a heartbroken humanity who occupy the upper crust of the urban social order and eventually have to slow down to wonder, 'Is this really worth it?"By the the time ramp queen Meghna Mathur reaches this self-searching stage, Fashion becomes not a macro-cosmic view of the ramp world, but a story of two women, one who already 'has-been' there (Kangana Ranaut) and the other who just about saves herself from catastrophe in the nick of time. The sequences between Priyanka and Kangana are the highlights of this bumpy journey into heartbreak and desolation. Some sequences leave a lump in the throat like the one where the ousted ramp queen Kangana confronts and warns Priyanka in a restaurant loo, or later after they bond.Whether it's sexual or emotional, Bhandarkar has never flinched from telling it like it is. Fashion shocks us with its brutal forthrightness on matters of the heart.Samir Soni performs a complex tight-rope as a closeted-gay designer, who balances a lover with his mother's demand for a wife with a marriage of convenience with a stunning model friend played by Mugdha Godse.Mugdha is the female discovery of the year. With a great figure and face that registers a spectrum of emotions, she gives a compelling consistency to her goodhearted model's character. What Kangana does in Fashion, no other actress can do. But there're no surprises in her performance as she has done it before.Priyanka catches you completely unawares. Her transformation from the bubbly Chandigarh girl to the super-ambitious supermodel, who dumps her boyfriend and conscience to pursue her dreams, is achieved with a gentle subtlety and bridled passion. This is Priyanka's coming-of-age film. She looks like a zillion bucks. And acts like a woman who connects with the darkest, most desperate human emotions without wallowing in them.Every character is written to accentuate the specific actor's grace in the given space. The performances of Kitu Gidwani and Ashwin Mushran stand out. Harsh Chaya's 'gay lisp' was the only annoying appendage. Also, the ramp walks could have been done with slightly more lan and subtlety.Eventually, the evocative screenplay decides to give its fallen heroine a second chance. But that seems more like cinematic liberty.Bhandarkar takes us through a labyrinth of emotions, some devastating in their gut-level directness. But at the end, we come away with a film that gives us something to hold on to permanently even as the characters on screen lose practically everything worth holding on to. A truly outstanding film.

Nicole Kidman’s Joyous Motherhood
(NSI News Source Info) October 31, 2008: She welcomed daughter Sunday Rose into the world three months ago, and Nicole Kidman still is on cloud nine over the birth of her and husband Keith Urban’s little girl.
“I’m raw and emotional,” Kidman told Parade magazine. “I cry even thinking of her. But they are tears of joy. Because I suppose I never thought I would get to [give birth to a child]. To have been given it so late in life – I’m so ready for it.”
“It’s very bittersweet. Because, at 41, I think, ‘I want to see her 21st birthday, and I want to see her get married.’ My relationship with death used to be far more ambivalent, I think, and now it’s very much about staying in the world,” Kidman tells. “That’s why in the past I could jump out of planes and take a lot of risks. Strangely enough, I think when you have children at 25, you still have that ‘what will be, will be’ attitude. It’s such a different way of parenting.”

Festival of Lights....Deepavali or Diwali
In many parts of India, it is the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile in the forest. The people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name, Deepavali. This word, in due course, became Diwali in Hindi. But, in South Indian languages, the word did not undergo any change, and hence the festival is called Deepavali in southern India. Southern India marks it as the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.
Diwali is celebrated on the first day of the lunar Kartika month, which comes in the month of October or November.
In Jainism it marks the nirvana of Lord Mahavira, which occurred on October 15, 527 BCE. The Sikhs celebrate Diwali for a different reason; on this day, the Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, was freed from imprisonment along with 53 Hindu Kings (political prisoners) whom he had arranged to be released as well. After his release he went to Darbar Sahib (golden temple) in the holy city of Amritsar. There, he was greeted by Sikhs and many other people. In happiness they lit candles and diyas to greet the Guru. In India, Diwali is now considered to be a national festival, and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith.
On the day of Diwali, many wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks. Some North Indian business communities start their financial year on Diwali and new account books are opened on this day.
Hindus have several significant events associated with it:
*Return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya: Diwali also celebrates the return of Lord Rama, King of Ayodhya, with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana to Ayodhya after a 14 year exile, and a war in which he killed the demon king Ravana. It is believed that the people of Ayodhya lit ghee lamps along the way to light their path in the darkness. Since Lord Rama traveled from South India to his kingdom in North India, he passed through the south earlier. This is the reason why the festival is celebrated a day earlier in South India.
*The Killing of Narakasura: Celebrated as Naraka Chaturdasi, two days before Diwali day, it commemorates the killing of Narakasura, an evil demon who created havoc, by Lord Krishna's wife Satyabhama. This happened in the Dwapar Yuga during this time of Lord Krishna's avatar. In another version, the demon was killed by Lord Krishna (Lord Krishna provokes his wife Satyabhama to kill Narakasura by pretending to be injured by the demon. Narakasura can only be killed by a woman) himself. Before Narakasura's death, he requested a boon from Satyabhama (believed to be an Avatar of Bhudevi), that everyone should celebrate his death with colorful light.
*Austerities of Shakti: According to the Skanda Purana, the goddess Shakti observed 21 days of austerity starting from ashtami of shukla paksha (eighth day of the waxing period of moon) to get half of the body of Lord Shiva. This vrata (austerity) is known as kedhara vrata. Deepavali is the completion day of this austerity. This is the day Lord Shiva accepted Shakti into the left half of the form and appeared as Ardhanarishvara. The ardent devotees observe this 21 days vrata by making a kalasha with 21 threads on it and 21 types of offerings for 35 days. The final day is celebrated as kedhara gauri vrata.
*Birth of GoddessLakshmi: According to the Puranas, the goddess of Wealth, Prosperity and Luck Lakshmi was born from the churning of the Milk Ocean, along with other magical beings and objects including Amrit, Kamadhenu,Chintamani, Halahal aka Poison, etc. She was sought by both the Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Deamons) but in the end she chose her husband as Vishnu.
*Krishna defeating Indra: Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali. It is the day Lord Krishna defeated Indra, the deity of thunder and rain. As per the story, Krishna saw huge preparations for the annual offering to Lord Indra and questions his father Nanda about it. He debated with the villagers about what their 'dharma' truly was. They were farmers, they should do their duty and concentrate on farming and protection of their cattle. He continued to say that all human beings should merely do their 'karma', to the best of their ability and not pray for natural phenomenon. The villagers were convinced by Krishna, and did not proceed with the special puja (prayer). Indra was then angered, and flooded the village. Krishna then lifted Mt Govardhan and held it up as protection to his people and cattle from the rain. Indra finally accepted defeat and recognized Krishna as supreme. This aspect of Krishna's life is mostly glossed over - but it actually set up the basis of the 'karma' philosophy later detailed in the Bhagavat Gita.
Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light, in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atman comes universal compassion, love, and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Ananda (Inner Joy or Peace).
Diwali celebrates this through festive fireworks, lights, flowers, sharing of sweets, and worship. While the story behind Deepavali varies from region to region, the essence is the same - to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atman) or the underlying reality of all things (Brahman).
*Bandi Chhorh Divas
For Sikhs, Diwali is particularly important because it celebrates the release from prison of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, (hence also called "Bandi Chhorh Diwas" or "the day of release of detainees") and 52 other princes with him, from the Gwalior Fort in 1619.
The Mughal Emperor Jahangir had imprisoned Guru Hargobind and 52 other rajas (princes). Emperor Jahangir had imprisoned the sixth Guru because he was afraid of the Guru's growing following and power. The Emperor was asked to release Guru Hargobind which he agreed to do. However, Guru Hargobind asked that the princes be released also. The Emperor agreed, but said only those who could hold onto his cloak tail would be allowed to leave the prison. This was in order to limit the number of prisoners who could leave.
However, Guru Hargobind had made a large cloak with 52 pieces of string and so each prince was able to hold onto one string and leave prison.
Sikhs celebrated the return of Guru Hargobind Ji by lighting the Golden Temple and this tradition continues today.
*Martyrdom of Bhai Mani Singh Ji
Another important Sikh event associated with Diwali is the martyrdom in 1734 of the elderly Sikh scholar and strategist Bhai Mani Singh, the Granthi (preacher) of Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). He had refused to pay a jaziya - special tax imposed by the Muslim rulers - on a religious meeting of the Khalsa on the Diwali day. This and other Sikh martyrdoms gave further momentum to the Khalsa struggle for freedom and eventually success in establishing the Khalsa rule north of Delhi
Bhai Mani Singh was a great scholar and he transcribed the final version of Guru Granth Sahib upon dictation from Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1704. He took charge of Harmandir Sahib's management on 1708. In 1737, he received permission from Mughal governor of Punjab, Zakarya Khan for celebrating Diwali at Golden Temple for a massive tax of Rs. 5,000 (some authors say it was Rs 10,000). Invitations were sent to the Sikhs all over India to join Bandi Chhorh Diwas celebrations at Harmandir Sahib. Bhai Mani Singh thought he would collect the tax-money from the Sikhs as subscriptions who would assemble for the purpose of Diwali Celebrations. But Bhai Mani Singh Ji later discovered the secret plan of Zakarya Khan to kill the Sikhs during the gathering. Bhai Mani Singh Ji immediately sent message to all the Sikhs not to turn up for celebrations. Bhai Mani Singh could not manage to arrange the money to be paid for tax. Zakariya Khan was not happy about the situation and he ordered Bhai Mani Singh's assassination at Lahore by ruthlessly cutting him limb-by-limb to death. Ever since, the great sacrifice & devotion of martyr Bhai Mani Singh Ji is remembered on the Bandi Chhorh Diwas (Diwali) celebration.
*Uprising against the Mughal Empire
The festival of Diwali became the second most important day after the Baisakhi, when Khalsa was formally established by the Tenth Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.
The Sikh struggle for freedom from Muslim atrocities, which intensified in the 18th century, came to be centered around this day. After the execution of Banda Bahadur in 1716, who had led the agrarian uprising in Punjab, the Sikhs started the tradition of deciding matters concerning the community at the biennial meetings which took place at Amritsar on the first of Baisakh and at Diwali. These assemblies were known as the "Sarbat Khalsa" and a resolution passed by it became a "gurmata" (decree of the Guru).
**In South India
*In Southern India, naraka chaturdashi is the main day, with celebration with firecrackers at dawn after lakshmi puja.
*The main festival in North India is on Amavasya (No moon day) evening with Lakshmi Puja which is followed by lighting of oil lamps around the house.
*The third day is celebreated as Balipadyami as the day of Vamana's victory over 'Mahabali'
**In Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, Diwali starts from Vasubaras which is the 12th day of the 2nd half of the month of Ashwin. This day is celebrated by performing an Aarti of the cow and its calf- which is a symbol of love between mother and her baby.
The next day is Dhanatrayodashi (tra-3 dashi-10 i.e. 10+3=13th day) or Dhanteras. This day is of special importance for traders and business people.
The 14th day of Ashwin is Narakchaturdashi. On this day before sunrise, people wake up and bathe after rubbing scented oil on their body (they also bathe using Utna). After this the entire family visits a temple and offers prayers to their God. After this visit, everyone feasts on Faral which is a special Diwali preparation consisting of delectable sweets such as "karanji", "ladoo", "shankarpale" and "mithai" as well as some spicy eatables like "chakli", "sev" and "chivda".
Then comes Laxmi- poojan. It occurs on Amavasya i.e. no moon day. The dark night is illuminated by lamps and at dusk crackers are burst. New account books are opened after a pooja. The stock exchange performs a token bidding called Muhurta bidding. Generally the traders do not make any payments on that day (according to their belief Laxmi should not be given away but must come home). In every household, cash, jewellery and an idol of the goddess Laxmi is worshipped. Friends, neighbours and relatives are invited over and celebrations are in full swing. The broom used to clean one's house is also worshipped as a symbol of laxmi in some places .
Padwa' is the 1st day of the new month - Kartik in the Hindu calendar.
Bhaubeej - it is the time where in the bond of love between a brother and sister is further strengthened as the sister asks God for her brother/s long and successful life while she receives presents from her beloved brother/s.
Homes are cleaned and decorated before Diwali. Offices perform pooja. Bonuses and holidays are granted to employees on these auspicious days. People buy property and gold on these days too. Children build replica forts in memory of the founder of Maratha empire, Shivaji Maharaj. For children, Fire works, new clothes and sweets make Deepavali the most eagerly awaited festival of the year.
**In Bengal (Deepawali)
Kali Puja is light-up night for Kolkata, corresponding to the festival of Diwali (pronounced Dipabali in Bengali), where people light candles in memory of the souls of departed ancestors. The Goddess Kali is worshipped at night on one night during this festival. This is also a night of fireworks, with local youth burning sparklers and crackers throughout the night. Kolkata had to pass legislature a few years back to ban fireworks which break the 65 decibel sound limit, as ambient noise levels were going up to 90 decibels or more in parts of the city.
*In Nepal, Diwali is known as "Tihar" or "Swanti". It is celebrated during the October/November period. Here the festival is celebrated for five days and the traditions vary from those followed in India. On the first day (Kaag tihar), crows are given offerings, considering them to be divine messengers. On the second day (Kukur tihar), dogs are worshipped for their honesty. On the third day, Laxmi puja and worship of cow is performed. This is the last day according to Nepal Sambat, so many of the businessmen clear their accounts on this day and on finishing it, worship goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. The fourth day is celebrated as new year. Cultural processions and other celebrations are observed in this day. The Newars celebrate it as "Mha Puja", a special ritual in which the body is worshipped to keep it fit and healthy for the year ahead on this day. On the fifth and final day called "Bhai Tika", brothers and sisters meet and exchange pleasantries.
*In Trinidad and Tobago, communities all over the islands get together and celebrate the festival. One major celebration that stands out is the Diwali Nagar, or Village of the Festival of Lights. It features stage performances by the east Indian cultural practitioners, a folk theatre featuring skits and plays, an exhibition on some aspect of Hinduism, displays by various Hindu religious sects and social organizations, nightly worship of Goddess Lakshmi, lighting of deeyas, performances by various schools related to Indian culture, and a food court with Indian and non-Indian vegetarian delicacies. The festival culminates with magnificent fireworks displays ushering in Diwali. Thousands of people participate in an atmosphere devoid of alcohol and in a true family environment.
*In Malaysia, Diwali is known as "Hari Deepavali," and is celebrated during the seventh month of the Hindu solar calendar. It is a federal public holiday throughout Malaysia. In many respects it resembles the traditions followed in the Indian subcontinent. 'Open houses' are held where Hindu Malaysians welcome fellow Malaysians of different races and religions to their house for a sumptious meal. 'Open house' or 'rumah terbuka' is a practice very much unique to Malaysia and shows the goodwill and friendly ties practised by all Malaysians during any festive occasion.
*In Singapore, the festival is called "Deepavali", and is a gazetted public holiday. Observed primarily by the minority Indian community, it is typically marked by a light-up in the Little India district. The Hindu Endowment Board of Singapore along with Singapores' government organizes many cultural events around Deepavali time.
*In Sri Lanka, this festival is also called "Deepavali" and is celebrated by the Tamil community. On this day, it is traditional for people to wear new clothes and exchange pleasantries.
*In Britain, Hindus and Sikhs celebrate Diwali with great enthusiasm and in most ways very similarly to as in India. People clean and decorate their homes with lamps and candles.A popular type of candle used to represent this holiday is a diya. People also give each other sweets such as laddo and barfi, and the different communities may gather from around the country for a religious ceremony and get-together. It is also an important time to contact family in India and perhaps exchange gifts through the post. It is a greatly celebrated holiday and is a great way to connect with the culture and heritage of India. Diwali is becoming a well known festival in Britain and non-Indians also join in the festivities. Leicester plays hosts to some of the biggest celebrations outside of India itself. Diwali also coincides closely enough with the British Guy Fawkes (Bonfire Night) traditions on November the 5th that in many areas, such as the East End of London, a kind of joint festival has evolved where everyone celebrates and enjoys the same fire and fireworks for their own diverse reasons.
In New Zealand, Diwali is celebrated publicly among many of the South Asian diaspora cultural groups. There are main public festivals in Auckland and Wellington, with other events around the country becoming more popular and visible. An official reception has been held at the New Zealand Parliament since 2003.

She tells The Mirror, "I think that everything happens for a reason and I wouldn't take back anything that I've done. I don't like talking about it because it was something that was meant to be private and I'd still like to keep it as private as I can."
Williams Defends Lohan
Lohan's role on the show was cut down from six episodes to four, leading to speculation that her onset behavior was to blame.
But Williams, a regular star in the hit series, insists that stories about Lohan being difficult to work with are simply not true.
She says, "That's what the press does, that's what gossip's about, and media is about.
"I had a few scenes with Lindsay. She was a hard worker, she showed up on time and in the scenes I had with her, she was completely prepared. In terms of me working with Lindsay, she was professional, she knew her lines and she was great with me."
Biel's Paparazzi Fears
The actress found herself a major media target when she began dating pop star Justin Timberlake in 2007.
And the 26-year-old admits that she is often left terrified by her encounters with the paparazzi.
She tells Britain's Marie Claire magazine, "It's hard. The hardest part of this whole wonderful, bizarre lifestyle and profession.
"You have to be Zen about it, because it can make you crazy.
"There are times when I have been followed by men with giant cameras in giant SUVs all day long. It scares the [bleep] out of me and I literally come home and emotionally erupt and cry it out and sit on the floor and think, 'Do I really want this?'"
Barton Happy Single
The former "The O.C." star admits it's rare for her to be out of a relationship, but she's enjoying having some time to herself.
She says, "I'm not used to being single, but it's really nice. It's great, actually.
"Just embrace it. It's important to breathe for a minute."

India is influencing U.S. culture, from top designers to Disney
(NSI News Source Info) October 20, 2008: The influence of Indian culture in mainstream New York was once largely limited to yoga classes or a chai from Starbucks - and, of course, the added chance of a killer curry in Jackson Heights.
But as the Indian economy thrives, the South Asian subcontinent is driving taste and trends halfway across the world. All things India are no longer just exotic additions to American culture - they're transforming its very fabric.
Indeed, 1% of the American population is now of South Asian origin. The largest cluster, around 800,000, is here in the Tri-state area.
Indian influence on culture and entertainment - music, movies, art - is evident with Channel 500, the Bollywood movies-on-demand network, to the new Cheetah Girls movie, "One World," in which the Disney group breaks into Bollywood and records a soundtrack with an Indian edge.
Professional divorcee Denise Richards returned to acting with a lead in a pan-cultural Bollywood mashup, and Steven Spielberg's financing now comes from Bollywood backers. Then there's Jay-Z, who has remixed tracks to Bhangra beats, and Snoop Dogg's "Singh Is Kinng," a collaboration with Indian artist Akshay Kumar.
Southeast Asian taste is taking over fashion, too. High-end designers like Hermes (who chose Bangalore-born model Lakshmi Menon as the brand's official face) and Armani churned out an Indian-inspired collection recently, and Gaultier has even hired an India-trained designer, Ra-mesh Nair, to be his No. 2.
Ralph Lauren and Perry Ellis both hired DJ Suhel to spin for their runway shows. When the Pussycat Dolls vamped through a performance at "Fashion Rocks" last month, they were swathed in saris by Rocky S.
It was the work of stylist Hitha Prabhakar, who's also a New York correspondent for Elle magazine's Indian edition.

Blissful Fertile Green Land Of Kerala....Guruvayur Temple

The Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple is one of the most famous temples in India. It is located in the town of Guruvayur in Thrissur district of Kerala. The presiding deity is Shri Krishna, in the standing posture with four hands (Chaturbahu) that carry the Sankhu (conch), the Sudarshana chakram (a serrated disk), the lotus and the mace. The Lord is worshipped in his many manifestations, the favorite with devotees being the 'Sankalpa' of the Lord as 'Unnikrishnan' (Infant Krishna). For devotees Guruvayur is "Bhooloka Vaikuntham" and Dakshina Dwaraka.
The idol of the diety is made of a rare stone known as Patala Anjanam. The hereditary Tantri (Head Priest) of the temple is from the Chennas Mana.
Legends
Sri Narada purana mentions Guruvayurpura mahatmyan and describes how Janamejaya was cured of leprosy by taking refuge under the feet of Guruvayuruppa. The Pandavas handed over the kingdom to their grandson Parikshit, and left for the forest to spend their last days. Parikshit died of the curse of a saint, who cursed that Parikshit will die of snake bite by Taksaka, the king of serpents. After the death of Parikshit he was succeeded by his son Janamejaya. Janamejaya conducted a sacrifice to destroy all the snakes of the world including Takshaka, who was the cause of his father's death . Hundreds of thousands of snakes fell into the sacrificial fire and were killed, but the sacrifice was stopped before Takshaka was killed, by a Brahmin called Astika.
Since Janamejaya was responsible for the death of millions of snakes, he was afflicted with leprosy. He lost all hope of a cure. One day Sage Atreya (son of Atri) came before Janamejaya and told him to take refuge under the feet of Krishna at Guruvayoor. Atreya told that in the temple at Guruvayyoor the effulgence of Sri Hari is at its best and Vishnu showers his blessings on all devotees. Hearing this, Janamejaya wanted to know the full details of the Sthala purana and the greatness of the temple.
Sthala Puranam
According to legends Bhagwan Vishnu himself had worshipped the idol that we see now at Guruvayur, before donating it to Brahma. Prajapati Sutapa and his wife Prsni prayed to Brahma, and pleased at their devotion Brahma gave them this idol. Sutapa and his wife Prsni worshipped the idol with such devotion that Mahavishnu Himself appeared before them for granting a boon. In their over enthusiasm they asked thrice "We need a son equivalent to thou" . Mahavishnu told them that he himself would take birth as their son in three different janmas (births) and in all those threejanmas they would get the vigraha given to them by Brahma.
In the first janma in the Satya Yuga, Mahavishnu was born as Prsnigarbha, as son of Sutapa and Prsni. Prsnigarbha instructed the world the importance of Brahmacharya to the world. In the second janma, Sutapa and his wife Prsni were born as Kashyapa and Aditi and Mahavishnu was born as Vamana. In the Dwapara Yuga, Krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devaki. This idol was given to them by Daumya for worship. Sri Krishna established a big temple at Dwaraka and installed this idol there. At the time of swargaarohana Krishna instructed his devotee Udhava to install the idol at a sacred place with the help of Brihaspathi, the guru of the Devas and Vayu, the God of the winds. They (Guru and Vayu) took the idol and came down to a place down south and installed it. This is why the place got its name Guruvayu, where ur means place. It is also said that Bhagavan Shiva and his consort Devi Parvati were present at the auspicious moment and because there was a lack of space in the temple premises, Shiva moved a little further away, and gives his blessings from the nearby Mammiyoor Temple. Every devotee who goes to Guruvayur is supposed to go toMammiyoor also, as per tradition. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple premises. The temple pool is known as the Rudra Thirtham.
Temple Architecture
For a very famous Temple, the Guruvayur Temple may not appear as imposing as many other famous temples in India. But the Temple is a classic example of the typical Kerala architecture style with a Koothambalam and an Aanappanthal. The walls of the temple sport mural paintings, depicting episopdes from the Puranas.
The Sreekovil, where the idol of the Lord is installed, is square in shape with pyramidal roofing. The walls of the sreekovil abound with mural paintings. The door, as well as the roof, is covered in gold. On either side of the door, two statues of 'dwarapalakas' are seen.
In front of the sreekovil, is the Namaskara Mandapam. It is rectangular in shape with pyramidal roofing. The sreekovil is surrounded by a wall structure called the Nallambalam or the Chuttambalam. On the left side of the Sreekovil, a small temple well known as the 'Manikkinar' is located. To the right of the Sreekovil, forming part of the Chuttambalam, the temple kitchen known as 'Madappalli'is seen. The 'Saraswathi Ara', where Saraswathi Pooja is conducted during Navaratri is close to this. The shrine of Ganapathi is to the left of the Sreekovil. Outside the Nallambalam and in front of the entrance the Kodimaram or Dhwajastambham (Flagpole of the temple) can be seen. The balipeetams also are located here.
The Vilakkumatam, which is an intricate array of metal lamps, is attached to the outside walls of the Nallambalam. On auspicious occasions these lamps are lit thus illuminating the whole Temple.
The shrines or Sastha and Devi, the upadevathas, can be seen on the southern side and the northern side respectively.
The whole area between the east gopuram and the west side of the Nalambalam is covered with a tiled roof called Aanappandal or Nadappura which provides shelter for elephants and for the pilgrims waiting for worship and is decorated with pictures and paintings. Annaprasnam and tulabharam are conducted here. To the south of the gopuram there is a very big Temple Bell.
The Koothambalam, where Koothu is conducted, is located at the south-east corner of the Temple while the Pattayappura or the granary is situated on the south-western side.
The northern side of the building is called the Agrasala or the dining hall. This is also used for daily Narayanajapam, Bhagavata discourses and sometimes as the green-room for Krishnanattam.
The passage through the northern wall of the temple leads to the temple pond called Rudratirtham. It is here that the processional deity or the Utsava Vigraha is bathed on the last day of the Utsavam (the annual festival).
